In This Corner by Jon D. Smiley, C.E.O.
Sunnyside and the Lower Valley is a culturally diverse area. That is something we should be proud of and not view as a weakness. Many of we newcomers who have lived here only 10-12 years have been warmly accepted by long term residents. But many more newcomers continue to arrive. The question of how they are welcomed in our hospital and in our community will define the future of this community.
Our prosperity is contingent upon our ability to accept and embrace the unique nature of every person who walks through the doors of the hospital. We must understand that not every person views the world the same way we do. We must also understand that no single view is right or wrong. They are just different.
Try to answer this question. If someone is a different gender than you do you treat them differently? Are all men impatient? Are all women interested in shopping too much? If someone is considerably different in age than you - does that impact your view of that person?
"Don't trust anyone over 30."
For a generation that age divide caused disharmony among young and old - and many of the same sorts of barriers remain to be overcome today. Even if we believe we don't do any of these more subtle generalizations we need to be aware that they do still exist. We need to continually examine ourselves, and to be intolerant of "humor" that stereotypes, or gross generalizations that demean a group or individual.

Most editors don't like putting news about themselves in their newspaper. The editor of this publication is no different. But, I was challenged to include a picture from my first "century" bike ride June 14th.
I was one about 1000 riders involved in the Wenatchee Century Bike Ride. To be honest, about half of the group opted for a 50 mile option. But, I was the nutty ones who decided it would be cool to ride 100 miles. Ron Duren - spouse of Penny Duren - also rode this event. He rode it quite a bit faster than I. In fact, I have it on good authority that he was back in Sunnyside about the time I finished the ride Saturday evening. But, I did finish!
I am also signed up to ride in an event called the STP next month. Gifts of Ben Gay and ibuprofen will be greatly appreciated. Mr. Duren, Dr. Hugh Shiels (who also rode in Wenatchee) and other experienced riders are equally worthy of your support and congratulations should you run into them. But, I am really touched by everyone who has given me the atta boys and way to to messages in the past week.

I would like to thank everyone who attended the reception that was given in honor of Helen (Kone) and myself and to those of you who attended my graduation commencement on Thursday. I really do appreciate all of the support that I have received from my friends, co-workers and medical staff of SCH. I look forward to working with everyone in my new position as a registered nurse. A special thank you to Jon Smiley, the board of Sunnyside Community Hospital and SCH Auxiliary for their financial and moral support. I could not have done it without all of the help that I received.

Dr. Martin Dubek, fourth from left in the picture, celebrates with the other members of his residency program who completed their training this week. (Remember click on any small photo with a blue border for a larger image.)
Dr. Dubek will be moving from Roanoke, Virginia to the Valley in about three weeks. Dr. April Biggs will also be arriving in early July.
Dr.
LaFountain on to Residency
Elisa LaFountain recently celebrated graduation from UHS/Kansas City. Elisa completed her second, and part of her third year in training associated with the hospital and medical staff. Dr. John Allen, pictured with Maureen and his son Nigel went to Kansas City to participate in the graduation ceremonies with Elisa... err... Dr. LaFountain.
Dr. LaFountain is entering an Internal Medicine Residency program in Pennsylvania.
Healthy Habits for Life
The Employee Activity Committee invites you to enroll in Healthy Habits for Life. This is a six week class that will start July 10th. It will run for six straight Thursdays at 5:00 p.m.
Whether you join this class or not, the committee is also looking for 20 employees interested in upgrading membership at the Valley Racquet & Fitness Club to "corporate membership". When that happens it will lower fitness club fees for all hospital employees at the club.
To find out more about Healthy Habits check the "stuffer" in your payroll envelope, or download the flyer here. To sign up for the Healthy Habits class contact Penny Duren.
Golfers Finish 2nd
Jim Schlenker, CFO, participated in the "3rd Annual Mabuhay Foundation Golf Tournament" on Saturday, June 14th. The tournament is a fund raising event for the Filipino Community that Ray Pasqua helped organize this year which benefited the Wapato and Yakima Filipino communities.
The event was a four person scramble and the team he was part of ended up in 2nd place, three strokes behind first.
Your Help
Would be Appreciated

It has become a concern that locating Wheelchairs for the Main Lobby and ER is nearly
impossible. My staff and our volunteers have even gone to inpatient units in search for
wheelchairs for patients arriving to the hospital and in need of one. If you
locate an unused wheelchair in your areas call Mabel Kluth with the location sites. I will arrange for either my staff or volunteers to pick
them up and replenish the ER and Main Lobby areas.
New Nurse Welcomed
We would like to thank all the employees that donated items for Bethell and her husband
Adrian. They are so grateful of everything they received. The only item that we
still need is a lawn mower. If anyone can donate one, please contact Linda or
Elaina. Thanks for all your help in supporting Bethell and Adrian.
