We are very pleased to announce the completion of the recruitment process for our Internal Medicine needs at the hospital.  Dr. Ellen Ang is the 4th member of our new team at Valley Internal Medicine.   Dr. Ang will be joining Dr. Sandra Wilson, Dr. Francesco Vinci and Dr. Coke Smith

Two of the physicians will serve as hospitalist, two will serve primarily in the clinic.  When all are relocated in September these four physicians will provide us with 24/7 coverage for our Internal Medicine needs.  This will be a big help to Surgery, Emergency Department, Med/Surg, ICU and Cardiopulmonary.  We have tracked many many patients who have been transferred to other facilities because of the lack of total Internal Medicine coverage.

I am grateful to everyone on our Recruitment and Retention Committee who worked hard over the past year to complete this recruitment.

Dr. Vinci was introduced in this newsletter a few weeks ago.  Many of you have already met Dr. Wilson who recently completed a temporary assignment here.  She will be back over the summer on house hunting trips and begin her permanent post September 1.

Dr. Wilson is a graduate of the University of Missouri and the University of Missouri Medical School.  She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Legacy Emanuel and Good Samaritan Hospitals in Portland, Oregon in 2001.  She has also worked as a volunteer physician in medical missions in Peru and Borneo.

Dr Ang will be relocated in late summer after completing her Internal Medicine Residency training in New York City.  Dr. Ang is a native of the Philippines.  She visited Sunnyside last month and was very pleased by her reception, as well as the number of other Philippine individuals living in the Lower Valley.  The hospital has four registered nurses recruited to Sunnyside

Dr. Ang is currently completing her training at Metropolitan Hospital Center in New York City.  She is a graduate of the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines.

Earlier this year the hospital announced the recruitment of Dr. Francesco Vinci.  Dr. Vinci will be the fourth member of the Valley Internal Medicine group.  He is currently completing training in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

We are also pleased to announce that Dr. John Dumbolten is joining practice with Dr. Al Yinug in Sunnyside.  David Hartman will be moving from Birch Street Medical to Dr. Yinug's to round out that provider group.

"A Smile, A Touch, A Caring Ear"

The Power of a Volunteer

13, 172 volunteer hours returned to the hospital during 2003.

submitted by Carol Allen

Volunteers are versatile.  Their tasks can change from day to day and patient to patient, but one goal remains constant - HELPING PEOPLE.  A thoughtful smile, a hand to hold, an ear when someone needs to share - these are but a few of the invaluable gifts volunteers bring to Sunnyside Community Hospital.   We will be honoring our volunteers at our Volunteer Recognition Luncheon to be held Tuesday, April 20.  With 13,172 hours of service of 2003, volunteers we thank and applaud you!  Congratulations!

CAH-telehealth.jpg (66659 bytes) Telehealth Brings Education and Info to Hospital

Many of the educational programs noted throughout the hospital newsletter and website are made available thanks to the workings of our Telehealth system.

This is a live video conference system that links this hospital with Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane and more than 20 other hospitals around the state.

Conferences like the state program on Critical Access Hospital licensing (pictured above with Claudia Arlington & Sheila Robinson) are scheduled to bring programs to healthcare providers that would normally require a trip out of town.

The Telehealth program was funded by a US Department of Agriculture grant backed by Congressman Doc Hastings and Senator Patty Murray two years ago.  It also links the Mattawa Rural Health Clinic and the Imaging Department of the hospital.  That way Dr. Robert Coleman can read films from the clinic the day they are made.

Telehealth programs are detailed below in the links provided under Nursing Notes.

Changes in Food Services

As discussed at the recent All Staff meetings, the price for a meal ticket for staff, volunteers and physicians, has been reduced to $17.50.  The face value of the meal ticket is $25, so this is a 30% discount.  Eat up and enjoy.  The Cafe also recently returned to china and silver.

Flowers in the Sidewalk

Editor's Note: the contributor of the following article asked to remain anonymous.

Ever come across a flower growing out of a crack in the sidewalk?  It gets your attention because it so unexpected and sweet.  I think we have lots of experiences like this in our daily routines at work and at home but seldom recognize them as such.  Try and see if you do.  Here are some examples to get you started.

A secret pal gift that values your contribution.    An invitation to lunch with someone you typically don’t eat with.

Notes of encouragement when times are trying.   Hugs from a co-worker without provocation.

Compliments.     Smiles and laughter scattered throughout your day’s routine.

The challenge is to really see these “flowers in the sidewalk” and let them have the effect on you that they promise.  Go a head; look for flowers right here in the halls of SCH.  Bet you’ll be as pleased and surprised as I have been.
